Lithium Battery Safety Guide for Kids' Electric Bikes
Your Zippi runs on a lithium-ion battery — reliable, powerful, and safe when handled correctly. Here's what every Zippi family needs to know about charging, storage, what to do if it gets wet, and how to handle an emergency.

Your kid's Zippi may run on a lithium-ion battery (Rippa and Rebel Range) — the same technology that powers phones, laptops, and electric cars. It's reliable, powerful, and genuinely safe when handled correctly. But "when handled correctly" is doing a lot of work in that sentence.
We're a family business. We built Zippi for kids like ours, so we're not going to sugarcoat this: lithium batteries require a bit of respect. Handle them well and you'll get years of carefree rides. Ignore the basics and things can go wrong quickly.
Here's everything you need to know.
01 · EVERYDAY SAFE HANDLING
Charging
Use the charger that came with the bike. This is the single most important rule. Third-party chargers — even ones that look identical — may not regulate voltage correctly and can overcharge the battery. Overcharging is one of the primary causes of lithium battery failure.
- Don't leave it charging unattended overnight. Charge it while you're awake and in the house. Unplug it once it's full.
- Charge on a hard, non-flammable surface — a concrete floor or a wooden shelf, not a couch cushion, carpet, or pile of laundry.
- Don't charge in an enclosed space like a car boot or a sealed cupboard. If something does go wrong, you want airflow and easy access.
- Let the battery cool down before charging after a ride. Charging a hot battery stresses the cells.
Storage
- Store between 15°C and 25°C — a cool, dry spot out of direct sunlight. Under the stairs beats the shed in summer.
- Avoid leaving it fully depleted for long periods. If you're not riding for a few weeks, store it with a partial charge (around 50%) rather than flat or full.
- Never store near flammable materials — petrol, paint, cardboard boxes, rags. Garages are fine; just be thoughtful about what's nearby.
General handling
- Don't drop the battery. Internal damage from impact isn't always visible on the outside, but it can compromise the cells.
- Keep it dry. The battery housing is robust, but it's not designed for submersion or prolonged wet exposure.
- Inspect it regularly. Take thirty seconds every few months to look it over. You're checking for anything unusual — cracks, leaks, discolouration, or swelling.
02 · SIGNS SOMETHING IS WRONG
Stop using the battery immediately if you notice any of the following:
- Swelling or bulging — the battery casing looks puffy or deformed
- Unusual heat — warm during normal use is fine; hot to the touch is not
- A chemical or burning smell — especially during charging
- Hissing, popping, or crackling sounds
- Discolouration or scorch marks on the casing or charging port
- The bike loses charge much faster than usual — sudden capacity drop can signal cell damage
If you see any of these, remove the battery from the bike (if safe to do so), place it on a non-flammable surface outdoors, and don't attempt to charge or use it. Contact us and we'll sort it out.
03 · IF SOMETHING GOES WRONG
If the battery gets wet or submerged
Getting caught in the rain? A splash from a puddle? Probably fine — the battery housing handles incidental moisture. A full submersion — into a creek, pool, or bucket — is a different story.
What to do:
- Don't try to charge or use it. Water ingress can cause short circuits; charging a wet battery can trigger a thermal event.
- Remove the battery from the bike if it can be done safely. Don't force connectors apart if there's resistance.
- Place it on a hard, non-flammable surface outdoors and let it dry. Don't put it in an oven, use a hair dryer, or try to accelerate drying — ambient temperature only.
- Keep watch for 24–48 hours. Lithium battery reactions from water damage can be delayed. If you see swelling, smell anything unusual, or the casing feels warm, treat it as a fire risk (see below).
- Do not dispose of it in general waste or recycling bins. Even after drying, a water-damaged battery should be taken to a proper drop-off point.
- Contact us. We can advise on whether the battery is safe to use or needs to be replaced.
The honest answer: if your battery has been fully submerged, replace it. Even if it looks fine and works fine initially, the internal corrosion from water contact can cause failure weeks later. It's not worth the risk.
If the battery catches fire or starts smoking
Lithium battery fires are rare, but they're serious when they happen. This is called thermal runaway — a chain reaction inside the cells that's very hard to stop once it starts.
What to do:
- Get everyone away from the area immediately — including pets. Burning lithium batteries release toxic fumes.
- IF SAFE TO DO SO - full submerge the battery in water and leave it. (bucket, bath, trough)
- Call 000. This is not a "wait and see" situation. Call the fire brigade.
- Do not use a standard fire extinguisher to try to put it out — it won't work and may make things worse. If you have a large bucket or drum of water, immersing a small burning battery in a container of water can help contain it, but only do this if it's safe to reach and move without putting yourself at risk.
- Don't breathe the smoke. Move upwind and stay back.
- If the fire spreads, leave the building and wait for emergency services.

04 · RESPONSIBLE DISPOSAL
Lithium batteries should never go in your household bin or yellow-lid recycling. They're a fire risk in waste facilities and harmful to the environment.

- B-cycle — Australia's battery recycling scheme with a drop-off finder on their site
- Planet Ark's recycling locator — search by material type and postcode
- Many Officeworks, Aldi, and Bunnings stores also accept used batteries for recycling — check your local store
